Odd Global Links Generative AI Production With Native Forest Restoration

Summary

New Zealand AI production studio Odd Global has launched The Odd Forest, planting native trees for every completed generative production. The initiative has already funded 38 trees across 15 projects through the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust. Its launch demonstrates how digital agencies can connect AI-enabled creative work with measurable local environmental action.

Our Analysis

• We believe Odd Global turns AI accountability into a visible, locally grounded marketing asset.
• The planting model gives international campaigns a measurable New Zealand contribution.
• Our team sees transparent impact counters becoming valuable proof points for technology-led creative work.
• Agencies should connect sustainability claims to independently recognisable partners and outcomes.

Full Story

New Zealand production studio Odd Global has launched The Odd Forest, a conservation initiative linking generative AI production with native tree planting on Banks Peninsula.

The South Island-based studio said it will plant native trees through the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust for every project it completes. The number of trees will be scaled according to the overall size of each production and its approximate use of image and video generation, creating a direct connection between digital output and physical restoration.

The initiative launched on August 20 with 38 native trees already planted across 15 AI productions. Odd Global said the work has been created for major international clients, agencies and production companies, including projects delivered for markets such as Brazil, the United States and Europe. The model gives overseas campaigns a local New Zealand environmental footprint, with restoration taking place in the region where the studio operates.

Each tree represents a NZ$50 contribution covering the tree, professional planting labour and initial maintenance. The plantings will be distributed across restoration sites in Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula according to ecological need. Rather than establishing one single site, the project is designed as a distributed native forest that grows production by production.

The launch campaign extends the idea into the studio’s own marketing. Its film was produced entirely with generative AI and presents a deadpan bush-scout story featuring a guide leading three young scouts through regenerating native forest. The film explains that the digital generations behind Odd Global’s work support real-world planting, including the unsuccessful concepts and production attempts that do not appear in final campaigns.

For digital marketing agencies and brands operating across New Zealand and Australia, the development illustrates how AI-related sustainability claims can be made more tangible. Instead of presenting efficiency or reduced physical production requirements as the sole benefit, Odd Global’s model attaches a measurable environmental action to the volume of generated work.

That approach also addresses a growing communications challenge for marketers: audiences are increasingly asked to assess how brands use emerging technology, not simply whether they use it. By publishing a planting counter and identifying its conservation partner, Odd Global is turning an abstract production process into an initiative that can be tracked, explained and connected to a recognisable New Zealand place.

Founder Arthur Machado said the studio wanted work that begins and ends in a digital environment to leave something tangible growing in the physical world. The project’s positioning, “Turning generations into regeneration”, presents generative production as both a creative capability and a basis for ongoing local investment.

The Odd Forest counter will be updated as new productions are completed. The initiative gives clients a way to associate AI-enabled creative work with native restoration while offering the wider marketing sector a practical example of how technology, brand storytelling and environmental contribution can be integrated into one campaign platform.
