When a client searches their own brand, who answers on screen one?

When a client searches their own company name, the answer on the first screen may no longer be written by them. An industry roundup updated four days ago logged the shift: AI Overviews are expanding into branded searches — Google is now showing them for more brand-name queries (Position Digital, page updated 12 October 2026). In one tracked set of branded queries, AI Overviews went from about 26% around 1 September to more than 80% by late September — that is DemandSphere's own tracked sample, not the whole web, and no reason was given (Search Engine Land, 1 October 2026, reporting DemandSphere data). There are three problems on this results page — how many can you spot?

At a meeting, a client searches their own company name and shows you the screen. The first result carries an AI summary about them, in words they did not write. Then they ask: so where do we rank?

That is a hard question, because rank is not the problem. An industry roundup updated four days ago logged the shift: AI Overviews are expanding into branded searches, and Google is showing them for more brand-name queries (Position Digital, page updated 12 October 2026). In one set of tracked branded queries, AI Overviews went from about 26% around 1 September to more than 80% by late September — that is DemandSphere's own tracked sample, not the whole web, and the report gives no reason for the change (Search Engine Land, 1 October 2026).

If you market for clients, start today by searching three of their brand names and asking who speaks for them on screen one. You will usually find three problems. First, no passage on that screen was written by the client and can be quoted. Second, the page is flat: title, description and Q&A sit at the same level, so a machine reads loose sentences. Third, and worst, someone else's page is answering whether this company is worth contacting. What the client reads about themselves comes from strangers.

One step you can take today: pick the three questions a client is asked most, write each as a question-and-answer block with the question as the heading, and put it on their own page. Clear, well-structured content helps search engines and AI assistants understand and cite your business; it does not guarantee citation or ranking.

Trade Pilot AI turns client questions and business details into website Q&A and social content, with human review before anything is published — try it with one client's question first.
